Chapter Twenty

The infirmary was a medium sized room in the rear of the Queen’s Keep. We walked through the assembly room and then through one of the doors in the back of the room. The infirmary was down a short hallway.

There were four beds to my right, headboards against the wall. Along the opposite wall were a couple of tables and some glass-doored cabinets filled with bottles and vials.

Rebecca, the healer, pointed to one of the beds and I carefully laid the Queen down on top of it. The Queen’s eyes fluttered for a moment after I removed my arms from her body. She mumbled something and then she passed out again.

“Margaret, what happened!” the Healer asked the brown haired Elf as she hurried to examine the Queen.

“The bullbear hit one of the guards and sent it flying. It struck the Queen. She was knocked out. I have not been able to wake her,” Margaret explained.

“Is anyone else hurt?” the Healer asked as she lifted up the Queen’s eyelids and examined her pupils.

“No, we were fortunate that Luke the Smith was able to strike a mighty blow and slay the beast as the girls slowed the creature with ice,” Margaret said.

“Luke is also injured,” Lily said worriedly.

The healer looked up at me. I shook my head.

“It's nothing. I’ve had worse,” I told the healer.

“I will check you after I see to the Queen,” she said as she felt around the Queen’s body for any wounds or broken bones.

Rebecca then got up and went to one of the cabinets. She returned with a container containing a blue cream. When she opened it, I caught a whiff of lavender.

The healer rubbed some of the paste on the bruise on the Queen’s forehead. After a moment, the paste glowed softly and then faded away. I shook my head in wonder. The paste was gone and the bruise on her forehead was only half the size it had been previously.

The healer set the cream aside and walked back to the cabinets, returning with a clear glass vial containing a red liquid. She sat down on the edge of the bed and looked up at me.

“Could you please lift her head up so that I may give her some of this potion?” she asked.

I sat down on the opposite side of the bed and carefully lifted the Queen’s upper back with one hand while I supported her head with my other hand. I felt the tingling sensation again as I touched her.

I wondered if the Queen felt it as well, because her eyes fluttered again. She mumbled something. The healer took the opportunity and poured some of the red liquid intp the Queen’s mouth. The Queen instinctively swallowed and then coughed.

“Good. Lay her back down,” the healer directed.

“Will she be all right?” I asked.

The healer gave me a little smile as she nodded.

“Yes. The blow to her head knocked her out, but it doesn’t seem to be too serious. The salve and the healing potion
